Earlier this month, Stacey Preston, from our Wakefield site, was invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, recognising her work supporting young people through The King’s Trust programme.

Stacey works in the despatch department for our Customer Moss, she’s responsible for checking and processing garments before they leave site, ensuring stock is accurate and ready to be delivered to over one hundred stores each week. “I am the last person to check them before they leave the Wakefield warehouse,” she explains. “It’s a great role and it keeps me really busy.”

Having been with Torque for almost six years, Stacey’s experience is grounded in operations but her route into supporting the programme comes from a different background.

Before joining Torque, she worked as a primary school teacher, specialising in Early Years education. “That role was about preparing children for what comes next,” she says. “Helping them build confidence, understand the world around them, and develop the skills they need to progress.” Those same principles now shape her role as a buddy on the King’s Trust programme.

Supporting the transition into work

Over the past year, Stacey has supported eight participants across two programme cohorts at the Wakefield site.

From the outset, her role is practical. When participants arrive, many are quiet, unsure, and often overwhelmed by the scale of the environment and what’s expected of them. “In the first few days, they’re working out the basics. Where they need to be, how to get there, how the environment works,” she explains. “They’re also learning the processes, the equipment, and the safety systems at the same time. It’s a lot.” Her role is to help bridge that gap.

That means being a consistent point of contact, helping participants settle into the working environment, and guiding them through the day-to-day realities of the job. “I help them get to grips with the processes, correct mistakes, and use those moments as learning opportunities,” she says. “But a big part of it is confidence. Helping them feel capable and recognise when they’re doing something well.”

Why the buddy role matters

For Stacey, the success of the programme is closely tied to the buddy system. “It makes a difference in so many ways,” she says. “It’s not just about teaching tasks, it’s giving people the time, support and encouragement to achieve things they might not otherwise have attempted.”

Without that structure, she believes participants would miss out on more than just training. “They’d miss out on the confidence and the belief that they can do it,” she adds.

The role has also changed how she works day-to-day. “It’s made me more aware of how important it is to support people, especially those who are new or dealing with challenges you can’t always see,” she says. “Taking the time to help someone early on can make a real difference.”

Recognition at Buckingham Palace

That impact was formally recognised with Stacey’s invitation to Buckingham Palace. “It’s hard to put into words what it meant,” she says. “It was something I never expected.”

For Stacey, the significance wasn’t just the setting, but what it represented. “I felt like the work we do here was recognised in the biggest way possible,” she says. “That meant a lot.”

During the day, she met a range of people connected to the Trust, from long-term volunteers to young people whose lives had been transformed by the programme. “One young person I spoke to had gone on to start their own business,” she says. “And I met a volunteer who had been supporting the Trust for over 40 years. It really shows the impact it has on both sides.”

A practical difference

“The biggest difference we make is helping young people develop the skills and confidence they need to take their next steps,” she says. “In the workplace and beyond.”

It’s a simple outcome but one built through consistent, day-to-day work. And while the invitation to Buckingham Palace marked a moment of recognition, it represents the same principle that underpins the programme itself: real work, real support, and real progression.

All nine participants who completed Torque’s latest Get into Supply Chain programme, delivered in partnership with The King’s Trust, were offered contracts at the end of the programme.

Delivered at our Leeds and Wakefield sites, the programme gives young people hands-on experience inside a warehouse environment. Building practical skills, confidence and a route into employment.

For Daniel, from Leeds, that outcome would have been hard to picture just a few weeks earlier. “I hadn’t worked in a warehouse before,” he says. “Some things were difficult at the start, just getting used to it and getting into a proper routine.”

Referred by the Jobcentre, Daniel joined the programme seeking an opportunity to gain experience. What followed was a fast-moving introduction to warehouse operations.

He began by picking, one of the core operational processes.“That was the hardest part for me,” he says. “I’ve got dyspraxia, so coordination can be a bit of a challenge. It took time to get used to the movement and the process, and using the scanners.”

Both The King’s Trust and the team at Torque were aware of this from the outset, and support was built around it. Expectations remained the same, but with the understanding and flexibility needed to give Daniel space to learn the role properly.

“I still had to do the work,” he says. “But I was given a bit more time where I needed it. I felt supported.”

Like many participants, the early stages were focused on adjustment. To the pace, systems, and the expectations of a real workplace.

But that transition is exactly where the programme starts to deliver. Over time it got easier,” Daniel says. “Now I’ve done picking, box making, sortation, and returns. You start to understand how everything works together.”

 

Building skills that translate beyond the warehouse

While technical capability is a key outcome, the biggest shift often happens in behaviour and routine.

For Daniel, it was reliability. “Timekeeping has been a big one,” he says. “Before, I’d just leave enough time to get a bus. Now I plan properly and give myself time. It’s more like a proper working routine.”

That change is reflected across the cohort.

Participant feedback highlights consistent improvements in punctuality, resilience and adaptability:

  • “I’m proud of being consistently here on time and punctual.”
  • “I’m proud of improving my time management and after shift routine.”
  • “I am proud of working in a team and working under pressure.”
  • “I’m proud of sticking with it and trying new things.”

Alongside this, participants are building practical, job-ready skills:

  • “I have learnt key skills… such as effectively finding and picking goods.”
  • “I have learnt how to use new advanced tech.”
  • “One positive is that everything is structured and has a convenient process.”
  • “I’m getting confident that I’m getting the processes correct.”

Together, these shifts in behaviour, confidence and competence are what enable progression into employment.

Learning in a real working environment

A key difference in Torque’s approach is that participants are not working in a simulated setting. They are integrated into the operations, contributing to real contracts alongside experienced teams.

That exposure accelerates both learning and confidence. “It’s given me a proper insight into what happens in a warehouse,” says Daniel. “There’s a lot more going on than you think, but everything works well. The systems are good, and everything fits together.”

Participants also point to the environment as a key factor:

  • “The people at Torque are very approachable and nice to talk to.”
  • “A peak for me has been working with other people.”
  • “I have loved meeting new people.”

Support structures, including the buddy system, help bridge the gap between training and real work. Giving participants a clear point of contact and building confidence early on.

“We are delighted to support Torque with the important work they are doing with The King’s Trust. We wish all of those who are starting their careers at Torque the best for the future.”

From placement to progression

At the end of the programme, outcomes were marked at a celebration event held at The King’s Trust offices, bringing together participants, programme teams and partners.

During the event, participants delivered short presentations on their experience and demonstrated the processes they had learned, showcasing the practical skills developed over the course of the programme.

For Daniel, the next step is continuing to build that experience.“At the minute it’s about getting experience,” he says. “But I’d consider continuing in this kind of work now.”

That progression, from no prior warehouse experience, including additional coordination challenges, to operating on a customer contract, reflects the core aim of the programme.

 

A consistent partnership delivering outcomes

Now in its fifth programme over three years, Torque’s partnership with The King’s Trust continues to focus on moving young people into work through practical experience.

As Molly Horsfield, Youth Development Lead at The King’s Trust, explains: “Torque’s dedication to support and encourage our young people enables them to build their confidence and take the opportunity to start their career and find sustainable employment within the supply chain industry.”

The model is straightforward: real work, real expectations, and the support needed to bridge the gap between potential and employment.

Over the last year it’s not lost on us how many bricks‑and‑mortar stores our customers have opened across Yorkshire, so last week we headed out to see it for ourselves. We spent the day visiting Torque customers across Leeds, Harrogate, York and the York Designer Outlet. Dropping into stores to meet the people behind the dispatch notes and see the products on display.

Everywhere we went, the mood was the same: open, upbeat, and genuinely excited about the momentum building across Yorkshire’s retail scene.

The momentum is clear in the data. Torque now works with 17 customers across 40 locations throughout Yorkshire, from premium arcades to heritage high streets and outlet destinations. Collectively, these brands are opening new stores, expanding footprints and reinvesting in physical stores with a level of confidence and long‑term commitment that’s reshaping the region’s retail landscape.

This wave of openings includes a Northern debut for Finisterre, bold moves such as Sweaty Betty's Leeds relocation, Moss' new Briggate flagship, and destination launches in Harrogate and York that underscore Yorkshire's retail renaissance.

Harrogate has welcomed ME+EM's first UK store outside a major city and Sosandar's on James Street. At the same time, York's Stonegate now hosts WYSE London's first store in the North.

We began our roadtrip in Leeds, where established arcades and newer retail spaces sit side by side, and it was clear from the first few store visits why the city works so well for our customers.

Finisterre lands its Northern debut

Finisterre's new store in the Victoria Quarter feels right at home. Their first Northern location brings together reclaimed materials, repair and recycling services, and a community-led approach that fits neatly with Leeds' outdoorsy personality. The 2,464 sq ft space feels new but completely at home in Cross Arcade, like it's been there all along.

Sweaty Betty recommits

A short walk away, Sweaty Betty's new home in Victoria Gate brings a bright, energetic shift from their long-standing spot in Victoria Quarter. Relocating to the 835 sq ft store signals a real commitment to Leeds. After 11 years in the city, the team was buzzing about the fresh layout and the footfall the new spot brings. It feels like a natural step forward for them.

Astrid & Miyu, who opened back in 2022, were early to the service-led game in Leeds with piercing, styling, and welding all under one roof. It’s one of those places where you can see the experience-first model working exactly as intended, with queues out the door every weekend.

Moss steps up on Briggate

We wrapped up Leeds on Briggate at Moss’ new flagship. Moving from the Trinity Centre to the city’s most iconic shopping streets has reshaped their presence. The three-floor store brings together hire, tailoring and casualwear in a space that really shows off the brand.

The store design and carefully curated product are a testament to Moss’s ongoing commitment to quality menswear, staying at the forefront of it’s category while remaining true to its heritage. 

“Men today don’t just want to look good - they want to feel confident in what they wear,” says Brian Brick, CEO of Moss. “That means clothes that fit well, feel great, and suit their day, wherever that takes them. Our role is to take the stress out of getting dressed - combining style with service that makes the whole experience effortless.”

Harrogate

From Leeds to Harrogate, the tone changes quickly. The retail environment is measured, the stores considered, and it was clear from our visits that brands approach this town differently.

ME+EM chooses Harrogate

ME+EM’s boutique on Prospect Crescent is their first UK store outside a major city, yet it feels immediately at home. Set inside a Grade II listed former bank, the 1,300 sq ft space has more room than you’d expect at first glance. The team talked about how naturally the brand fits the Harrogate customer - and they’re right. The old vaults downstairs now serve as storage, which has to be one of the safest stockrooms in town.

"One part of our long-term business strategy is to continue to grow our physical presence globally. Stores are such an integral part of building an omnichannel business and play a crucial role in brand discovery, allowing our customers to see and feel the product first-hand.
Harrogate is a beautiful historic town and we knew from the data that we had a strong existing customer base there. We’ve seen great success since opening, our Yorkshire based customers have responded very positively to our British Modern Luxury proposition."

Sosandar opens on James Street

A short walk away, Sosandar’s James Street store is a real milestone in their move beyond DTC. Opened in February 2025, it has already found its place. The team was full of stories about customers who came in after years of shopping the brand only online.

Long-standing lifestyle anchors

Sweaty Betty continues to be a dependable presence on Station Parade, while Piglet in Bed’s first-ever boutique (opened in 2023) remains one of the cosiest, most tactile retail experiences in the area. Bedding you can actually touch makes more of a difference than you’d think.

York

Arriving in York after Harrogate, the change in setting was clear. The older streets and steady flow of people gave the stores we visited a noticeably different pace.

Wyse London: Craft and Character on Stonegate

Wyse London's first Northern store sits within a Grade II listed building on Stonegate, a street that already feels like a curated experience. Their warm, craft-first aesthetic feels carved out for York's personality.

York Outlet anchors and omnichannel nodes

York Designer Outlet continues to house key Torque customers, including Pavers, Moss, Yumi and Sweaty Betty, providing a value-driven complement to the city’s premium high street. As part of their Jones The Bootmaker Autumn/Winter 25/26 collection, Pavers have named a new loafer style after her. The ‘Talitha’ Loafer, launching in June 2025, is a tribute to the support and consistency Talitha brings to her role—and the impression she’s made on the Jones team.

Why Talitha?

We spoke to the team at Pavers, who shared:

“She’s always been helpful and considerate, offering support with various tasks and issues. Her reliable work ethic stood out, and naming a style after her felt like an acknowledgement of her effort.”

They also recalled a standout moment:

“When I first started working at Jones, Talitha kindly took the time to show me around the warehouse. Her clear explanations and thorough overview helped me quickly understand the process. This was significant in developing my role. She is also always willing to help us with any problem that arises, big or small!”

We caught up with Talitha to hear how she feels about the recognition and her experience at Torque.

What was your reaction when you found out a shoe was being named after you?

“I was very shocked to see they actually named a shoe after me! I was over the moon, very proud of myself. I couldn’t stop smiling about it—as having a unique name, I never had my name on anything. I'm still amazed by it now.”

What do you enjoy most about your role at Torque?

“I really enjoy being an admin. I love the challenges of getting everything completed before deadlines. I enjoy the people I work with—it wouldn’t run as well as it does without them. I’m very grateful for my team and everyone else who works hard in the warehouse.”

What’s one thing you try to bring to your work every day?

“Good spirit and positive attitude.”

Any advice for someone starting out in warehouse admin?

“Don’t be scared or stressed if it seems too complicated—you’ll become your own genius in no time. Becoming an admin gives you more opportunities to further your career and take a different path.”

There's nothing quite like standing beside a container ship the size of a skyscraper turned sideways to remind you of the scale — and sophistication — of global logistics. That was just one of many takeaways from our recent visit to the Port of Felixstowe, where we had the pleasure of hosting a group of customers from Moss for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK's most vital trade arteries.

Felixstowe isn't just any port. As the UK's largest container hub, it handles over 40% of the country's containerised trade. It's where supply chains meet steel, sea, and precision — and it's where automation is redefining how freight moves.

Giants of the Sea

The highlight for most of us was witnessing one of the ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) docked and in the process of being unloaded. These engineering behemoths carry upwards of 20,000 TEUs and represent the pinnacle of maritime logistics. It's one thing to read about these ships, and another to see one looming in front of you; it was easy to forget that each container carried everything from textiles to tech — each one part of a supply chain that might have begun in Shanghai and will end in Sheffield.

The port's massive ship-to-shore gantry cranes worked tirelessly above us, swinging containers with clinical efficiency. It's ballet, just on a scale where each dancer weighs 50 tonnes.

Innovation in Motion

But it wasn't just about scale — it was about smarts. Our tour included a look at the port's fleet of automated terminal tractors. These self-driving wagons navigate the container yard like seasoned veterans, moving freight from ship to stack with minimal human intervention.

These experiences bring essential context to the logistics behind the scenes. Seeing the complexity up close helps us all understand the incredible orchestration that underpins supply chains.

Seven participants joined Team Torque and our Get into Supply Chain programme, working across our Moss and Jaded London contracts. Of those seven, we’re delighted that four caught the supply chain bug and have secured full-time roles with Torque.

A Hands-On Learning Experience at Torque

The ‘Get into Supply Chain’ programme was developed by Torque to provide participants with a jump-start into the inner workings of a third-party logistics provider. Partakers are quickly taught the essentials through hands-on, practical, real-life experience accompanied by knowledgeable team members.

The Power of Buddy Support

Torque’s buddy system is key to the programme's and its participants' success. Experienced members of Team Torque mentor each young person throughout their journey, providing support and encouragement and helping them grow their confidence as they navigate our fast-paced work environment.

One of the participants Marcus shared:

"It’s nice to know that if I get stuck, I can go to them; the team are really lovely and helpful."

 

Jack, now a full-time employee, added:

"My buddy is explaining things in a way that I understand. And I actually feel confident for once."

Buddies also gain from the experience, developing leadership skills and contributing to a culture of mentorship and growth. Stacey, a Torque buddy on the Moss contract, reflected:

"It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be involved in the King’s Trust programme. I genuinely feel like I have played a part in making a difference to young people’s lives and futures. Seeing my practice through somebody else’s eyes has also helped me to improve my own day-to-day activities so it has been a positive experience all round."
